Breast Reduction

View the breast reduction procedure in 3D

This procedure reduces the size of the breasts by removing the fat, glandular tissue and skin from the breasts making them smaller lighter and firmer. It also reduces the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple and repositions the nipples.

It can deal with the problems associated with large breasts such as backache, neck pain, grooves in the shoulders from bra straps, rashes under the breasts and the feeling of self consciousness. It may also be used to correct asymmetry of the breasts where one breast is larger than the other.

The Breast Redcution surgery takes place in the modern Spire Little Aston Hospital near Birmingham.

The Operation:
The operation is carried out under general anaesthetic and is based on different surgical designs to reshape the breasts that involve a scar around the nipple and usually a vertical scar below this.

Patients usually remain in hospital for 1-3 days and require drainage tubes that are removed shortly after the procedure.

It is recommended to wear a firm fitting bra following the procedure for about four weeks.

Consequences and Limitations:
The intention of the operative procedure is to leave scars that are invisible while wearing normal clothing and as far as possible are designed to lie under the average bra/bikini top.

These scars may, however, become red and uncomfortable but tend to become more pale and less obvious.

Not all women are able to breast feed following this procedure. The sensation of the nipple will be different and most probably reduced following this procedure.

It is difficult to achieve perfect symmetry of the breasts following this procedure.

Potential Problems :
Like any major surgical procedure the complications associated with this procedure are bleeding, infection, delayed wound healing, and thrombosis of the legs.
